Nannying: How Kids Changed My View of the World

After months of monotonous work as a recruiter, sitting at a desk for 11 hours a day, I came to the conclusion it was time for me to find a new career. I decided to pursue a path in health and wellness writing, which meant I needed to take a few online courses. In the meantime, I was missing one big thing: an income source.

Maybe in a past life, I was a trust-fund baby, but sadly, this life is not that one. I needed a job that wouldn’t drive me insane, didn’t require too many hours, and I could make enough money to continue living in my Manhattan Beach apartment, just south of Los Angeles.

That’s where the idea to nanny came in.

Fast forward: I was offered a nannying job for a bohemian Venice couple. The part-time position paid well and, for that reason, I took the job. All of a sudden I was responsible for the lives of a six-year-old girl and a nine-year-old boy. Well, only from 3–8 pm.

For the sake of this article, we’ll call them Sarah and Ben.

As the job progressed, so did my relationship with Sarah and Ben. I found myself becoming more and more fond of them, almost as if they were my little brother and sister.

I thought nannying would simply be a job, but it turned out to be so much more. Working with kids gives you an untarnished…
